A journey to gain the Rongbuk and Kangshung vantage views of the great mountain starts east of Everest in Lhasa, the capital city of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Using four wheel-drive vehicles, a small group of trekkers starts out along the Friendship Highway, stopping at Shigatse and Shegar before turning off the highway and crossing Pang La, a 5000metre pass that leads down to Karta. There are hiking trails to the base camp area for views of the Kangshung face of Mt Everest before returning to the trailhead to drive across to the Rongbuk valley. Rongbuk monastery offers the same magnificent views that greeted the first climbers, who approached Mt Everest from the north.
This exciting journey through Tibet to visit the Kangshung and Rongbuk approaches to Mt Everest offers a fascinating cultural experience along with some excellent high altitude trekking into mountain areas rarely visited by foreign visitors.
