Using four wheel-drive vehicles, a small group of trekkers starts out along the Friendship Highway, stopping at Shigatse and Shegar before turning off the highway and crossing Pang La, a 5000metre pass that leads down to Karta. There are hiking trails to the base camp area for views of the Kangshung face of Mt Everest before returning to the trailhead to drive across to the Rongbuk valley. Rongbuk monastery offers the same magnificent views that greeted the first climbers, who approached Mt Everest from the north.
