In 1953 Nepal
opened its border to foreigners. Three years later, Everest was
climbed. Today Nepal is a popular destination for mountaineers,
trekkers and other visitors. In fact tourism is a major source of
foreign exchange for the small Himalayan kingdom, nestling between
India and the Tibetan plateau land. Most visitors will arrive in the
capital Kathmandu, a fascinating and bustling city lying in a green
and fertile valley. But to explore the country the visitor should
don trekking boots and take to one of many fabulous trekking routes
that lead up to the base camps of many of the world’s highest
mountains.
